Voting Tsunami: London Borough Elections Could Cause Chaos in May
London’s borough elections on 7 May could redraw the capital’s political map. With Labour facing mounting pressure and insurgent parties gaining ground, long-standing council strongholds may be at risk.
As London boroughs scramble to approve outstanding planning applications before election purdah kicks in, there is a growing realisation that there is going to be a political tsunami on 7th May.
Predicting these election results is a mugs game (!) but every pundit recognises that London's local government map is going to be fundamentally redrawn. This isn't a good time to be the leader of a Labour controlled London Borough. 😳
Before progressing the argument, it is important to note and recognise that there are some great Labour controlled local authorities in Greater London, local authorities who have transformed their communities. That won't stop them being voted out of office on 7th May.
These elections will change everything...
Why do these elections promise to be so transformational?
The first factor is the personal unpopularity of the prime minister and his government. There is a serious possibility even probability of Labour coming fifth on 7th May. Labour canvassers are having a hostile reception when they knock on doors and ask for voters' support!
The second factor is the popularity and political momentum of the two insurgent parties, Reform UK and the Greens. In the short term at least, their time has come. Labour is under siege from the Greens in some of their safest boroughs. The same is true for the Tories and Reform UK.
The third factor is the public mood. It is a combination of downright anger and frustration. They want to give the party in control a good kicking. This is a very difficult threat to counter. That is why Labour leaders across Greater London should be very worried.
The fourth factor is the growth of the independents which have become a major political force in East London. This is causing former Labour strongholds to look very vulnerable.
The political mood is febrile...
The political backdrop is febrile. Every day sees new developments which are creating ever more problems for the Prime Minister and, as a result, for London Labour council leaders. The situation is unlikely to improve before 7th May.
There will be many political shocks. Some council leaders will lose their seats. Safe Labour local councils will change control or move to no overall control. Longstanding political careers will come to an abrupt and brutal end.
In those London boroughs which are won by Reform UK, the new administrations will be be composed of politicians who are not yet councillors! There are no more certainties.
What happens to the Lib Dems?
In these strange times, the Lib Dems should be pretty confident of making gains in London. Yet. something doesn't feel quite right.
Ed Davey is currently the missing man of British politics. He seems to have disappeared, perhaps uncertain how to deal with the resurgent Greens. Compared to Zack Polanski, Davey just comes across as dull and rather lethargic.
Kingston and Richmond are safe but what will happen in Brexit supporting Sutton? A result to watch...
It will be ironic indeed if the rise of the Greens ends up damaging the electoral prospects of the Lib Dems.
So what do you do?
The situation in each London Borough will become clearer after the annual meetings which are being held towards the end of May.
Until then, developers need advice on what is likely to happen in the wards their sites are in and the local authorities as a whole. Who will be the winners and losers? Currently impossible to predict but the situation will hopefully become clearer nearing polling day.

In conclusion...
At the end of Wagner's Ring, Brunhilde declares 'I saw the world end ...' Valhalla, home of the Gods, is then destroyed. On 8th May, lots of mini Valhallas will suffer a similar fate as the borough election results start to be announced.
Local politics has never been this delicious ...
