Terrapin helped secure delegated consent for the transformation of the vacant and run-down Borough Buildings at 58-72 John Bright Street into a vibrant 179-room hotel close to Birmingham New Street station. The scheme will also provide a café, breakfast bar, co-working space and an active street frontage.Originally built in 1909 as an early car showroom, the character and history of the building required a sensitive approach to its renovation and design. The scheme retains as much of the existing building as possible while introducing an active ground floor and a set-back three-storey contemporary extension.
The delegated consent followed a wide-ranging briefing and engagement strategy involving the client, Nacropolis, planning officers, the architect and Terrapin. This included extensive work with planning officers, liaison with the owners and tenants of neighbouring buildings and consultation with local councillors. Terrapin is proud to have been part of a team that worked successfully with the local community to help regenerate this part of central Birmingham.
